Don’t want to wait for your Droid rebate? Go to Best Buy.

eWeek is reporting that Best Buy is offering customers an instant rebate with the purchase of a new Motorola Droid and a 2-year Verizon contract. Verizon is offering the $100 rebate to make the pricing of the new Droid phone competitive with the offering from AT&T for the iPhone. Rebates will be issued in the form of a pre-paid debit card that you would still have had to wait several weeks for. Best Buy is hoping to incentivize potential customers by giving you the rebate on the spot.

Thanksgiving and Black Friday are right around the corner and customers will certainly be looking at the Droid as a potential gift for family members, significant others, or even friends. Best Buy’s move is a nice perk that could lure consumers to buy from them instead of Verizon  as we hurdle toward the holiday season.

Motorola shares rise on unexpected profits and upgraded outlook

Sanjay Jha, CEO of Motorola and migrant from Qualcomm Inc last year, appears to be working some minor miracles at one of the oldest, most mature mobile phone manufacturer’s in the United States. Seems as though the market is betting on the anticipated popularity of Droid mobile phones being released this holiday season.

In the three-month period that ended Oct. 3, Motorola earned $12 million, or a penny per share. That compares with a loss of $397 million, or 18 cents per share, in the same quarter a year ago.

Jha said he expects an uptick in mobile revenue over the last three months of the year and into 2010, when the mobile phone division should begin to break even. Sales of more profitable smart phones should drive the improvement, even as Motorola’s overall volume of shipments is likely to decline.

Verizon feature overview & Google Maps Navigation

Verizon has a rather nice overview of a few of the Droid features that everyone is sure to love. One of the things that I’m most looking forward to is the addition of Google Maps Navigation. This functionality should make every executive at Garmin, Magellan, and TomTom sweat profusely.

A number of people have been using GPS systems in their car for a number of years. Garmin seems to be the most ubiquitous system on the road these days with the TomTom probably coming in at a distant second. However, I’m not aware of real “street view” imagery in use on any of these devices not to mention purchasing the head unit or getting maps for countries not in North America can set you back a few dollars. This feature is fantastic primarily because it turns your phone into a *true* GPS navigation device without the need for a seperate device.

Google Android 2.0 “Eclair” Released

The open software development platform that powers the new Motorola Droid has been released. Two notable features are SMS/MMS message search, automatic SMS/MMS message deleting based on a configurable age limit, MS Exchange server support (which should make business users who can’t use the iPhone happy).

iPhone fanboy pokes at Verizon Droid spot

It didn’t take long until someone had spoofed the new Verizon Droid TV spot “iDont”.

The opposition by a very devoted sliver of the iPhone customer base to anything that isn’t Apple is reaching a fever pitch long before the phone is even available for purchase by the general public. Hard to tell whether or not the spoofed spot was produced with tongue-in-cheek humor or is an iFan who is really upset with a product that may finally compete (though barely) with the two-year title champ from Apple.

“iDon’t buy brands that bash other brands”

Were that the case, the “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” advertising campaign would have been left sitting on the cutting room floor in Cuppertino.

It’s still a humorous video.
