Android 2.0 source released, runs on T-Mobile G1

Google quietly released the Android 2.0 source code last night. No sooner had it been released when the capable hacker community had it up and running on the T-Mobile HTC G1. The speed with which it was ported is either a testament to the skillz of those who do Linux programming or the stability of the OS build. In any event, it’s within the realm of possibility that a solid build for the G1 could come as soon as this weekend.

What if Microsoft had created Twitter?

I love this cartoon! It’s true… squared, and one of a dozen reasons I’m considering an Ubuntu desktop solution over Windows 7.

Whoops! Google seems to be targetting everyone

I hate reading blogs where it looks like the author doesn’t know what the hell he/she is talking about and there’s no shortage of them out there. Hopefully Droid Today hasn’t slipped into this zone of irrelevancy.

A couple of days ago I mentioned that, from all appearances, Google seemed to be targeting Apple’s iPhone market share and attempting to grow the mobile internet search market in a big way with it’s recent acquisition of AdMob. Given news this year, if you were to connect the dots, it would have been easy for anyone to come to the same conclusion — that Microsoft wasn’t in the crosshairs. One big “dot” absent from my analysis (and the claim that Microsoft, alone, was not squarely in the sights of Google’s growth strategy) was the Chrome OS they’ve been quietly working on. Tech Crunch reported on the official Google blog post back in July. The news flowed under the bridge after a few weeks only to hit a downstream dam this morning.

Droid sales analysis all over the map

Here’s an article at Yahoo Tech that underscores the dizzying range of analysts’ opinions of Motorola Droid sales from the launch weekend. I mentioned here that you could find any opinion to support your personal view of success for sales depending on where you look. Apparently I’m not alone in that thinking.

Read the Yahoo article

That said, a Citibank analyst told Bloomberg that while the Droid’s estimated numbers pale compared to the iPhone’s, “anybody that was expecting [iPhone-like sales figures] had their expectations too high,” and I’m inclined to agree.

After all, while the Droid isn’t the first Android phone on the market, it’s still essentially a first-generation device in the eyes of many consumers (a sizable portion of whom still aren’t sure what an “Android” phone is).

Also, don’t forget that the iPhone 3GS’s first-weekend total includes sales from eight different countries, while the Droid was only available here in the States.

Pics of Moto Droid innards released

Someone has responded to a Fixit challenge to provide pictures of a disassemble a Motorola Droid. Outside of the general interest in how things work or perhaps being of some benefit to accessory manufacturers, the pics won’t really be useful to anyone and certainly shouldn’t be attempted by someone who doesn’t know what they are doing.

Head over to fixit to see the shots.
