Mobsoup.com mobile analytics for android, iphone, blackberry opens it’s doors to developers

Mobsoup, which is either a bizarre name for a mobster or an appetizer that tastes like cement shoes, has just released their “HUMANalytics” (mobile analytics) platform to developers. While it isn’t the first mobile analytics engine on the web (and probably won’t be the last), it offers at least one option that the others do not: the ability to download raw statistics so developers and software houses can perform their own analysis. Trends for the mobile market space show nothing but Everest-like upward sweeps for the next 5 years and the general consensus is that any venture involved in the mobile experience has room for even more competition.

Libox iPhone app for media streaming will come to Android

Back in June, several sites covered the Tel Aviv, Israel-based startup Libox that aimed to let you play your media on any device, and easily share media with friends. Now Libox has released a free iPhone app, and after playing around with it for a few hours, it’s clear that the company has created something that practically every iPhone owner would find invaluable.

The company already has a very capable mobile web version of its service available (accessible by heading to Libox.com on your smartphone), but its new iPhone app offers an even more refined user experience. Menus are more responsive, media loads faster, and the app also allows you to add media directly from your iPhone to your Libox library (making it accessible on any computer that can access the web, and other mobile devices).

Whoops! Google seems to be targetting everyone

I hate reading blogs where it looks like the author doesn’t know what the hell he/she is talking about and there’s no shortage of them out there. Hopefully Droid Today hasn’t slipped into this zone of irrelevancy.

A couple of days ago I mentioned that, from all appearances, Google seemed to be targeting Apple’s iPhone market share and attempting to grow the mobile internet search market in a big way with it’s recent acquisition of AdMob. Given news this year, if you were to connect the dots, it would have been easy for anyone to come to the same conclusion — that Microsoft wasn’t in the crosshairs. One big “dot” absent from my analysis (and the claim that Microsoft, alone, was not squarely in the sights of Google’s growth strategy) was the Chrome OS they’ve been quietly working on. Tech Crunch reported on the official Google blog post back in July. The news flowed under the bridge after a few weeks only to hit a downstream dam this morning.

8Gb iPhone 3GS for $99 by Christmas?

In the world of politics and election campaigns, one of the oldest message practices is to step on your opponents “big news” by releasing big news of your own. The goal, simply, is to take a slice of the news cycle for yourself and attempt to muddy the hype around their news.

While there has been no official announcement, we see this practice in action today with unsubstantiated rumors that Apple will offer a version of the iPhone 3Gs for a mere $99 just in time for Christmas. Rumors emanating from the blogosphere are irritating since so few of them turn out to be true though that doesn’t stop them from being started.

Should the rumor mill turn this one into reality, here’s an interesting perspective on the implications to Motorola Droid sales for the holiday shopping season.

Fortune: Steve Jobs, CEO of the decade

Not necessarily android news, but considering the iPhone is being targeted by a bevy of android-enabled smart phones, I thought this was mildly related.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs was named CEO of the decade by Fortune Magazine and frankly it’s not even a close call why he was chosen.

In the past 10 years alone he has radically and lucratively reordered three markets — music, movies, and mobile telephones — and his impact on his original industry, computing, has only grown.

Think about that for a second. Radically reordered three markets. There’s not an executive on the planet who doesn’t pray to the god of Midas for the skill and good fortune to influence a single industry. Steve Jobs turned three of them up-side-down and remade them without realizing the impact they would have on people.

Some perspective on why Verizon will not get the iPhone

While several technology circles are abuzz with the prospect of Verizon offering an iPhone option when the AT&T / Apple exclusivity agreement matures in May(?) of 2010, here is an interesting opinion why such a move will not happen soon, if ever. There aren’t any reference links in the post to substantiate the author’s mathematical conclusions, but if the numbers are reasonably accurate, this is a well-thought-out and reasonable guess. Guess.

The truth is, the iPhone has fundamentally altered the mobile phone space and many of the norms for how business is conducted in these markets has been changed forever. My contention is that the only people who have an idea of whether or not an iPhone device via Verizon is possible are the executives of those companies.  Be suspicious of analysts who claim to have “the inside dope”. Wait for the press release.
